Happy Bicentennial Birthday Walt!
Whitman Woods Project was among 40+ Camden County and Philadelphia entities participating in Whitman at 200: Art and Democracy, a 2019 Bicentennial collaboration organized by the University of Pennsylvania Libraries with major support from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.
The 200th anniversary of Walt Whitman’s May 31, 1819 birth provided an ideal opportunity to illuminate the Good Gray Poet’s significant contributions to American life, his regional roots and his relevance today.
Curators, librarians, historians, poets, writers, artists and naturalists came together via Whitman at 200 to honor Whitman’s legacy with a yearlong series of celebratory cultural events, exhibits, performances, walks and talks on both sides of the Delaware. Bicentennial programming was especially rich in the weeks before and after Whitman’s May 31 birth date.
Whitman Woods Project hosted Nature/Bird Walks, Digital Nature Photography 101 & Painting/Drawing en Plein Air workshops and the celebratory Mid-Summer’s Eve Salon at “Whitman Woods” — A convivial assemblage of Wine, Music, Birdsong & the Bard’s Nature Prose featuring Basilica Brass & Bird Whisperer Lloyd Shaw.
